To the Editor:
The excitement of the upcoming Sandwich Fair will soon begin, although it is still months away.
There is months of planning and preparing by the Sandwich Fair Board to make each fair year better than the last. The board has always done a fantastic job to keep the family atmosphere within our beautiful Sandwich Fairgrounds.
The board has always restored historic buildings on the grounds and built buildings to represent buildings of the past to keep the Sandwich Fair a place for families to enjoy year after year. Safety for these families has been felt by many who have attended the fair.
My heart lost something for the fair when the historic grandstand was taken down for safety reasons in 2015. The grandstand was as much the heart of the fair as the historic Women’s Building. If we continue to take our fair down piece by piece, the fairgrounds will be like all the other commercial fairgrounds.
I realize the cost of replacing this historic grandstand is huge, but could we not have replaced this grandstand with something that at least looked similar to our old grandstand?
Metal bleachers out in the center field under the weather just doesn’t seem what Sandwich historians would have wanted us to replace this historic landmark with.
This landmark had seen baseball, horse racing, concerts, and many other events for over a century!
Cost is always an issue for many projects, but this project should be placed at the top of the list. The grandstand was taken down so quietly that when our town heard the news it was like we had lost a friend.
Please, all residents who love our Sandwich Fair, reach out to the Sandwich Fair Board. Contact your friends and family and look for the Sandwich Fair website or Facebook page for contact information.
The Sandwich Fair Board needs to know our communities would like to see a new and safe grandstand restored to the original space that we have had for over a hundred years!
I’m sure that I am not the only one who still looks for the grandstand when attending the fair!
