Letter: Do road repairs in Sycamore right the first time

To the editor:

I would like the City of Sycamore to evaluate on how they are spending our money in relation to road and parking lot repairs.

Case in point: Park Avenue and Charles Street were both “redone” this year by doing spot curb and sidewalk repairs, milling the existing asphalt pavement, leaving the existing 100-plus year old infrastructure and concrete base in place, and then paving over top of it.

While it is a nice new road currently, within 10 years it will need to be repaired again due to the existing concrete pavement failing underneath. Furthermore, none of the sewer or water main infrastructure was improved as well, meaning when we have a heavy rain the street will fill with water like it always does due to a lack of storm capacity, and our iron filled hard city water will not be improved.

Park Avenue was complete reconstructed between High and Waterman streets last year, and I am not sure why that was not continued south even though it receives the same traffic, most likely even more with St. Mary’'s Church there. I would rather have less roads fully reconstructed every year that are in need than to patch along many roads that will fail again in the near future.

Also, while I commend our public works employees for doing various projects in house, such as storm sewer and water main repairs and the excavation and sewer work for the parking lot reconstruction at Sacramento Street, it is more cost effective to have contractors who are equipped for this work to competitively bid and perform the work.

I by no means am bashing our city workers and their performance, but I am begging the City of Sycamore to please spend our taxpayer money more wisely and fix our infrastructure in a timely and cost effective manner the first time instead of doing it multiple times over in the future.
