Area roundup: DeKalb boys basketball falls to .500; NIU wrestlers win at SIUE

DeKalb (9-9) suffered a pair of losses during the final day of the MLK Jr. Shootout at Rockton Hononegah High School.

The Barbs played a tight contest against Normal Community – No. 9 in state – in their first game Monday. DeKalb, however, couldn’t overcome a lopsided second half, falling to Normal Community, 63-55. The Barbs were outscored, 17-8, in the third quarter.

Sophomore Isaiah Youngquist led the Barbs with 14 points. Senior forward Marcus Bobo added 10.

In the final game of the tournament, DeKalb had another poor second-half performance, falling, 58-44, to Hononegah. Senior Mike Vilet was the team’s lone bright spot, finishing with 15 points.

The Barbs went only 1-5 during a six-game nonconference stretch dating back to the beginning of the month. DeKalb returns to Northern Illinois Big 12 action this weekend when it hosts Kaneland at 7 p.m. Friday.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Four lead NIU at SIUE Tri-Meet: The Northern Illinois wrestling team swept a pair of matches Friday and Sunday in the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Tri-Meet at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield.

NIU defeated The Citadel, 43-10, in the first dual and scored a 28-14 victory over SIUE during the second dual.

“We are just proud of the fight and effort of every man [this weekend],” NIU coach Ryan Ludwig said. “From our freshmen that responded to the call to our seasoned guys we left it out there. ...It’s about fighting for everything and we saw that [this weekend]. We will build on that moving forward.”

Alijah Jeffery (133 pounds) led the Huskies – the junior won both of his matches via pinfall. He improved to 14-7 after pinning The Citadel’s Nicholas Long at 2:44 and SIUE’s Joe Antonelli of SIUE at 1:36. He owns a team-leading 65 career wins.

Sophomores Caden McWither (157), Caleb Gossett (285) and junior Bryce Gorman (184) joined Jeffery in perfection with all four wrestlers going undefeated in tri-meet.

The Huskies hit the road for a pair of separate matches this weekend. NIU meets Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday before facing Ohio at 1 p.m. Sunday.
