The DeKalb wrestling team had four wrestlers reach the semifinals of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional on Friday, with another five still alive in the wrestlebacks.

All nine Barbs will take to the mat again Saturday with the top four finishers in the tournament advancing to state.

Cogs struggle at Oregon sectional: The Cogs went 0-3 in the quarterfinal round and will battle back through the wrestlebacks Saturday.

The Cogs sent seven to the Class 1A sectional. At 106, Gabe Campbell won his first-round match but lost in the quarters.

Sean Logan at 182 and Jeremy Widmayer at 285 each had byes into the quarters, but each lost. Widmayer fell, 2-1, to Erik Quinnette of Dakota.

All seven Cogs – also including Cody Orlock at 120, Ethan Wood at 152, Will Butterfield at 195 and Jose Garcia at 220 – head back to Oregon on Saturday for the wrestlebacks.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

NIU loses first two games: The Northern Illinois softball team opened its 2018 regular season with a pair of setbacks on the first day of the Florida Atlantic University “First-Pitch” Classic.

The Huskies lost to Ohio State in the opening game, 9-1, before falling to Boston University, 6-2.  All three Huskie runs on the day were scored in the first inning.

“It was great starting both games with the lead,” NIU coach Christina Sutcliffe said. “We did a nice job getting runners in scoring position in both games, we just need to execute better once we are in those situations. Once our defense settles in, we will make a lot of plays we didn’t today.”
