Police seize 3 pounds of marijuana during domestic violence call

MALTA – What started as a domestic dispute call Sunday led to two arrests and the seizure of more than 3 pounds of marijuana by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a news release, deputies were called about 2 p.m. to the home of 67-year-old William M. Karas and 65-year-old Margaret E. Milkie in the 19200 block of University Road in Malta. They were responding to a report that a man had been beaten with a hammer.

Officers found Karas, who had a cut to his head and told them that Milkie attacked him, the police news release said. After Milkie admitted to attacking Karas, she was arrested on charges of domestic battery, assault and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence. She was taken to DeKalb County jail, police said.

While investigating the domestic violence, officers found a container of marijuana in the family room. According to police, Karas admitted to having another 2 pounds in a room upstairs.

More than 3 pounds of marijuana were found in the home’s upstairs bedrooms, police said. Karas was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and taken to the DeKalb County jail.

If found guilty of possession of more than 500 but not more than 2,000 grams of marijuana, Karas could face two to five years in prison.
