SYCAMORE – An 18-year-old DeKalb man accused of possessing a gun and drugs in connection with a March 27 standoff with police in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive is being held in the DeKalb County Jail on $50,000 bond.
Marquese L. Cannon, 18, of the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive, was arrested Thursday and has been charged with armed violence.
If convicted, he could face six to 30 years in prison.
Police arrested Zane V. Collins, 25, of the 900 block of Crane Drive, DeKalb, on March 27, after a more than six-hour standoff with officers that began about 3:30 a.m.
Police have said they responded to a report that Collins was threatening someone with a gun and later barricaded himself into an apartment bedroom.
More than six hours later, police entered the room and found a loaded 9 mm handgun, at least 30 grams of marijuana and marijuana-related contraband inside, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.
Collins is in the DeKalb County Jail on $20,000 bond.
DeKalb Police Cmdr. Bob Redel said Cannon owned the drugs, and although he isn’t necessarily the owner of the gun, he was in possession of it.
Judge Philip Montgomery ruled that the $50,000 bond attached to a warrant issued for Cannon’s arrest stand.
Montgomery said Cannon is on probation for six previous felonies.
Cannon – represented by the Yorkville-based firm Majer, Sheen and Piereth – said he couldn’t afford to post $5,000 bail to be released.
Cannon is due in court Thursday for a motion his lawyers have filed to reduce his bond, and he is expected to be back in court May 11 for a preliminary hearing.
Collins is due in court April 27.
