Elgin police officer ejected from motorcycle, charged with DUI in crash

KINGSTON – An Elgin police officer charged with driving his motorcycle under the influence is in critical condition in a Rockford hospital after a crash Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenneth W. Ericson, 49, of the 300 block of Cassidy Lane, was traveling east about 3 p.m. on Base Line Road when he failed to stop at the Annie Glidden Road intersection and was hit by a northbound 2009 Toyota Camry driven by Mark A. Sparacino, 51, of the 200 block of Leeward Lane in Rochelle, the release said.

Ericson was ejected from his motorcycle and flown to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was in critical condition Friday afternoon, hospital staff said. Ericson was not wearing a helmet, DeKalb County Deputy Police Chief Andy Sullivan said.

Sparacino was wearing his seat belt and was not hurt, according to the release.

Ericson was cited for DUI and failing to yield at a stop sign, and the crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office.
