To the Editor:
Throughout history we have seen too much violence led by religious leaders. The fusion of the civil with the religious has led to too many atrocities. And now we witness white American leaders gleefully opening the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem to the invocation of so-called religious leaders. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner do not speak for the citizens of the U.S.
They are willful political puppets of the right wing. Trump has gone to inciting bloodshed to keep his base happy. This is outright immoral and represents the worst of American leadership.
Palestinians are massacred while beautiful Ivanka and her entourage welcome the Caucasian audience to the embassy, a sick irony that victims of the Holocaust will find terribly immoral.
Preachers and religious leaders as well as all people of faith dare not remain silent. The Trump administration has Palestinian blood on its hands and we are indeed complicit. We need to repent of our benign neglect as voters who have allowed Trump to become POTUS. We need to confess our own sins of institutional systemic racism that continue to plague our country and the globe. We need to call out our leaders who pander to right-wing extremists.
Let us stand in solidarity with those whose blood has been shed on the Gaza border and insist on their basic human right to a violence-free homeland. It seems that Israel is participating in the very act of violence perpetrated against them. The victim has become the oppressor.
Where is the moral leadership of our Senators and congressional representatives?
Silence is no option.
