Prep roundup: Kaneland soccer rolls in semi; Sycamore baseball picks up big win

The Kaneland girls soccer team got a pair of goals from Abby Taylor to knock off Hampshire, 2-0, in the a Class 2A Burlington Central semifinal on Wednesday.

Taylor started the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute for the Knights (13-4-2). Carlson would go on to add a goal in the 52nd minute to push the lead to 4-0 on an assist from Lindsay Penkala.

Penakla already had a goal, connecting the 27th minute on an assist from Emma Hedlund. Taylor's second goal came 10 minutes into the second half on an assist from Abbie Lomahan, and Rachel Franck closed the scoring in the 78th minute with an assist from Andrea Paulino.

The Knights will play for the regional title at 6 p.m. Friday against host Burlington Central.


Sycamore tops Richmond-Burton: The Spartans picked up a big late-season non-conference win, knocking off the Rockets, 5-2.

R-B (18-10) had won 11 straight before the loss, and the Spartans were facing Louisville committ Jake Rosing.

Gage Armstrong had two hits and drove in two, and Jeff Maness pitched a scorless sixth to preserve a 3-0 lead at the time.

Justin Pottorff threw five scorless innings and left after 61 pitches.

"We had to keep him fresh for (the start of the postseason)," coach Jason Cavanaugh said. "He had to throw less than 70 pitches, and he did that. He threw only 20 balls, and half of those probably were intentional – trying to get people to chase pitches out of the zone."

The Spartans host Plano at 6:30 p.m. Friday for senior night.

DeKalb beats Rockford Lutheran: Bryce Wheeler tossed a four-hitter and earned the shutout in a 4-0 win.

Wheeler whiffed 13 in the win and walked one.

Eric Nelson was 2 for 3, while James Keck drove in two runs. The Barbs only had four hits in the game but benefited from two Rockford Lutheran errors.

The Barbs had no errors in the win.


Spartans beat Rockets: Faith Reynolds had a big day in the Spartans' 11-3 win over Richmond-Burton.

Reynolds not only went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, but allowed one earned run and struck out six in to earn the victory in the circle.

Haley Trela was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, while Mindy Smits also had two RBIs.

Kaneland edges Yorkville: The Knights were 2-1 winners at home against the Foxes.

Katie Kurzrock had a pinch-hit double to drive in Hannah Theobald with the go-ahead run in the fourth.

Donatela Sommessi had two hits in the win. Emilee Erickson allowed one earned run in seven innings, striking out 10 and allowing four hits.
