Area roundup: Sycamore claims fourth straight regional title; NIU baseball loses

The Sycamore girls soccer team won its fourth straight regional crown, beating Rockford Boylan, 3-1, on Friday in the championship match of the Class 2A Freeport Regional.

Jaden Peck opened the scoring on a cross from Ella Holland after a scoreless first half.

Taylor Meier added the second goal, then Saydie Holland scored with 8:30 left for a 3-0 lead.

Boylan scored a goal in the closing minutes.

The Spartans advance to the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional at 4 p.m. Tuesday, facing Crystal Lake South. The winner faces Burlington Central or Prairie Ridge for the sectional title at 4 p.m. Friday.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Indian Creek, Hinckley-Big Rock seasons end: Neither team was able to qualify an athlete for the state tournament out the Class 1A Erie Sectional.

Hinckley-Big Rock did not score, and Indian Creek finished with four points. Newman Central Catholic won with 104 points.

PREP BASEBALL

DeKalb wins in 11: Jenna Levine doubled to score Amanda Dubeau as the Barbs beat Boylan, 7-6.

Ashley Nelson pitched four innings of relief for the win for DeKalb (8-19).

The Barbs open the postseason Wednesday at Hononegah.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

NIU falls at EMU: Another solid offensive performance went by the wayside for Northern Illinois as it fell, 4-2.

The Huskies shelled out their second straight double-digit hit count – 12 in all – but stranded 11 runners on base as they lost their fourth straight game and moved their overall record to 19-36 and 8-18 in the Mid-American Conference.
