Biking with Beanzie celebrating 20th year

The Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club will host its 20th annual Biking with Beanzie ride on July 15.
The Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club will host its 20th annual Biking with Beanzie ride on July 15.

The Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb invites cyclers to DeKalb – now officially recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community – for the 20th annual Biking with Beanzie ride on July 15.

Beanzie is a family-friendly, recreational ride with varying distances to suit both the novice and the experienced rider. The ride is organized by Kishwaukee Kiwanis and co-sponsored by Northwestern Medicine. The ride also is supported by the local Kiwanis family (Key Club and AKtion Club) and other groups (4-H, Ride Illinois, Kish Bike and Rec Club, and North Central Cyclery).

Biking with Beanzie starts and ends at DeKalb High School, 501 W. Dresser Road in DeKalb. Participants can choose a road ride of approximately 25, 46, 62, 80 or 101 miles. Each has well-marked directional and humorous signage throughout.

For the novice or younger families, off-road routes are offered that follow a local bike pathway. Distances of 3, 5 and 8 miles can be chosen on the bike pathways with the cost of $10 for adults.

Participants are encouraged to register early, either online or by mail. Registration also is available for walk-ups the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Registration before July 7 costs $27. Late and event-day registration costs $35. The event is free for children ages 12 and younger when riding with a parent or guardian.

Registration includes cue sheets for the routes, a number of rest stops with refreshments, SAG (support and gear) support, post-ride access to showers and food options.

As a part of the 20th-year celebration, Beanzie will offer its first tie-dyed T-shirt with paid registrations for all registered riders.

To download a flyer with photos of the shirt, payment information and other registration details, visit kishkiwanis.org/bwb-general-info. Beanzie also has a Facebook page: facebook.com/beanzieride.
