Driver airlifted after car hits culvert, lands upside down in creek

A Somonauk man drove into a ditch, went airborne after the car struck a culvert and came to rest upside-down in a nearby creek, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Jeffery A. Atwell, 40, was driving south on East Sandwich Road north of Bastian Road when he lost control of his car on the gravel shoulder and drove into the west ditch, the report said. The car left the ground, struck and snapped ComEd pole and landed upside down in the creek, according to the release.

Atwell was pulled out of the car by witnesses and given CPR at the scene by a passer-by, the release said. He was taken to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich by the Hinckley Fire Protection District and then flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Johnna Kelly, spokeswoman for Good Samaritan, said there is no one with the name Jeffery Atwell in their patient directory and that the hospital doesn’t have any kind of information to provide regarding a condition report on Atwell.

Northwestern Medicine officials said there is no one by that name currently in the patient directory for Valley West Community Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, sheriff’s officials said in the release.
