Area roundup: Leon scores hat trick as DeKalb wins at Morris

Sycamore girls tennis knocks off DeKalb; Carpenter shoots 2-under-par as DeKalb golf wins at Kaneland; IC boys golf wins

Andrew Leon needed only seven minutes for a hat trick as the DeKalb boys soccer team rolled to an 8-1 win Thursday at Morris.

The Barbs led, 5-0, only 14 minutes into the game. Mauro Talamantes scored twice for DeKalb, while Jesus Becerra, Isaak Cordova and Andrew Hammarberg each scored once.

The Barbs improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Genoa-Kingston blanked at home: The Cogs fell, 2-0, to Dixon.


G-K wins conference opener: The Cogs won, 25-20, 25-19, at Stillman Valley.


DeKalb tops Kaneland: The Barbs won on the road behind a 2-under-par 34 from Emma Carpenter.

Jack Paeglow added a 36, Will Schimbke shot a 38, and James Keck carded a 40 for the 148-154 win.

Indian Creek boys cruise at Sandwich: R.J. McCoy was medalist for the second time in as many meets at the Timberwolves won, 199-225.

McCoy shot a 44 for the win.

G-K boys fall to Rockford Lutheran: The Cogs lost, 179-193.

Trevor Pierce led the Cogs with a 45, and Vinny Giorno added a 47.

Sycamore golf beats Morris: The Spartans were 160-175 winners.

Hinckley-Big Rock beats Plano: The Royals won, 190-236.

Cody Cleveland was the medalist with a 45, while Jackson Reuland and Brian Bohannon each shot a 47.


Sycamore tops DeKalb: The Spartans were 4-1 winners at home.

Sycamore swept at singles, with Lizzie Egerman (6-3, 6-2) and Abby Krull (6-0, 6-3) picking up wins.

Emily Grayburn and Emma Keicher won, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles and Claire Regelbugge and Alyssa Cooley were 6-0, 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

DeKalb’s win came from Josie Hoppenworth and Izi Meyer Miller at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. The Barbs fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference.


Ward earns Mid-American Conference honor: Northern Illinois senior Brielle Ward got her 2018-19 season off to a fast start with a victory last weekend at the Redbird Invitational to earn the first MAC Golfer of the Week honor of the season, MAC officials announced Thursday.

Ward, who shot a 4-under par 212 to pick up the second outright tournament title of her collegiate career, earned a five-stroke win with rounds of 71-71-70 at the season-opening tournament, played at the D.A. Weibring Golf Course in Normal. She led the way, as NIU won the team title at the Redbird Invitational by 17 strokes over Eastern Kentucky.

“It’s great to see Brielle get the first MAC Golfer of the Week honor,” NIU coach Kim Kester said. “She played extremely well at Illinois State, and we look forward to seeing her continue the great play the rest of the season.”


NIU men’s soccer shuts out WIU: Freshman Diego Sanz scored his first collegiate goal, as NIU recorded a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois.

Junior goalkeeper Konrad Dziedzic posted his third shutout of the season as the Huskies improved to 4-2; Western Illinois fell to 1-4-1.

“We said coming into this week that we wanted to stop the goals against after giving up five goals in two games,” NIU coach Ryan Swan said. “We have done that today; we gave up very few chances, got the early lead. We created a lot of chances. The shots on goal and opportunities created were really good.”
