Letter: Kavanaugh appointment decision troubling on many levels

To the Editor:

None of this is simple. These are very troubled waters. There are no winners. And very little can be proven. There is one way, however, to make easier a supportive decision, or not, of the U.S. Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh versus the very credible accusations of sexual assault by Christine Ford.

To decide, one needs, for the moment, to look beyond this aspect of Kavanaugh’s fitness for SCOTUS and consider, rather his own, provable words (of concern) from his own opinions of record.

The most worrisome of these, in my opinion, is in Kavanaugh’s expressed belief that a sitting president should not be able to be prosecuted for wrongdoing. The notion of that kind of imperial presidency is frightening, indeed; certainly not the kind of government leadership I believe in. But, many, me included, believe that President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh for this exact opinion.

Ford’s accusations must be investigated. No question. But there already are plenty of other, provable reasons to be concerned for the future of the country if Kavanaugh is confirmed.
