To the Editor:
It is a sad day for our American democracy as wealthy interests have gained control of all three branches of our government. This will have serious consequences for the majority of Americans.
With Brett Kavanaugh joining John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch on our Supreme Court, it likely will be hostile to workers’ rights, women’s rights, voting rights, access to our courts and the public’s right to a clean environment.
Kavanaugh might also offer immunity to our corrupt president and those he wishes to pardon from state charges. We have a Republican-controlled Congress that has exerted no check and balance on the power of this would-be dictator president. Dictators control the free press to control the message and their people.
Unfortunately, many Americans are exposed to Murdoch’s propaganda channel and believe what they hear as fact. Republicans have also ended net neutrality to control what content is delivered on the internet. It is unfortunate that schools don’t emphasize civics and the citizens’ responsibility for voting. That, I believe, is why only half of our eligible voters are registered.
The Federalist Society judges on the Supreme Court pretend to believe in the original intent of the Constitution. However, our founders never envisioned that corporations were people and money was speech. The American Revolution was fought over the East India Company and its control over commerce. The fundamental problem with our democratic system is that oligarchs now can buy our representatives.
Congressmen Adam Kinzinger and Randy Hultgren don’t represent their constituents. Kinzinger wouldn’t even meet with his constituents as he took away their health care.
Congressional Republicans now are coming for your Social Security and Medicare so they can give greater tax cuts to the wealthy. The Koch brothers have bought a congressional majority and now they have a deciding vote on the Supreme Court. Republicans have gerrymandered and engaged in voter suppression in many states, and our highest court has overturned the voting rights act.
Kavanaugh’s confirmation showed that he is just a political operative dressed in a robe. The legitimacy of the Supreme Court now will be questioned by Americans. It will take a miracle to end the corruption of our democracy. I am not sure that it will happen with the unlimited dark money allowed in our political system.
