Prep roundup: Paeglow qualifies for state but Barbs finish seven strokes shy as a team; Indian Creek wins wild regional semi behind seven goals from Gaston

Seven strokes is all that separated the DeKalb golf team from a berth in the Class 3A state championships, as the Barbs took fourth place Tuesday at the Class 3A Palatine Sectional.

“Our goal all year has been to get downstate, and to finish one place away is a little disappointing,” DeKalb coach John Cordes said. “We had our opportunities, but fell a little short later in rounds. It wasn’t, for the most part, from a lack of effort. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

Jack Paeglow qualified for state with a 1-over-par 72, taking second behind Stevenson’s Conan Pan’s 71.

“We know Jack is one of the best golfers in the state, and he’s had some great rounds – 2-under at the conference meet, 3-under at regional,” Cordes said. “All it takes is one time to not play well to not qualify for state. But he grinded out a 1-over 37 on the front nine, then got his control back and finished with an even-par 36. It was nice to see him get on top of his game, on top of his nerves. He really did a nice job.”

The Barbs finished with a 312 as a team, trailing Barrington’s 305 for the final qualifying score. Lake Forest won with a 296.

Brett Paeglow was the next-best DeKalb golfer, shooting a 78 to finish in a tie for 25th. The cutoff for qualifying for state was a 75.

“They gave it their best shot,” Cordes said. “They just fell short.”

The meet was postponed from Monday.

The state championship begins Friday at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, concluding Saturday.
