DeKalb man who tried to beat, stab ex held on $200k bond

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge set bond at $200,000 Thursday for a DeKalb man accused of repeatedly beating his ex-girlfriend.

Devon B. Kelley, 30, of the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive was charged Tuesday with domestic battery, assault, criminal damage to property and criminal damage to a residence.

Judge William Brady set the bond, which would require Kelley to post $20,000 bail to be released. Assistant State’s Attorney Alesandra Friend told Brady that Kelley’s now ex-girlfriend was in the process of seeking an extended order of protection against Kelley.

“The victim is in fear for her safety,” Friend said. “He’s continuously tried to break into her apartment.”

Kelley said in court that he planned to ask that his bond be reduced.

Police said in court records that Kelley showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the 1200 block of Rushmoore Drive at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday and told her drugs he’d taken weren’t what he’d hoped for.

Police said he then tore her bedroom apart, hit her with a wooden mattress support, scratched her face and chased her downstairs, trying to stab her with a fork.

Kelley then left the building and the woman locked the door, records show.

Kelley returned, however, punched through glass in the front door and grabbed a piece of it, threatening to slash her throat.

Court records show that Kelley was sentenced in 2015 to two years of conditional discharge for domestic battery involving the same woman.
