GENOA – DeKalb County Community Gardens is founding a Genoa Area Community Food Hub, according to a news release from the organization.

The new project will be the center of a public meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at 415 W. Main St., Genoa, which will serve as the construction site of the new food hub. Light refreshments will be available, and a presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Visitors will get a chance to learn more about the construction and upcoming plans for the project, which is expected to be completed in July, according to the release.

The food hub aims to “address the root causes of poverty and provide economic vitality that has the potential to transform Genoa and the surrounding area for years to come,” according to the release.

The hub will feature an expanded food pantry for Genoa and residents of the surrounding area. It also will have a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen for nutrition and cooking education demonstrations, as well as rental and incubator space for small, start-up food-related enterprises, the release stated.

There also will be a small pay-as-you-can cafe for residents. DeKalb County Community Gardens also hopes to partner with area churches and nonprofits for future initiatives through the food hub.

DeKalb County Community Gardens is a local nonprofit with a mission to end hunger and food insecurity in the county.
