Filicetti: Farmers market a start to a fresh summer

It is the time of year when everyone brings out their lawn chairs, opens their windows and starts searching for local farmers markets. Farmers markets are a staple of summertime, where residents can buy locally grown produce, fresh cut flowers and more.

The DeKalb Farmers Market is the perfect place to start your summer. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, June through September, at Van Buer Plaza in downtown DeKalb, brought to you by presenting sponsor Northwestern Medicine. The market is now open and will include more than 25 vendors throughout the season, all featuring a wide range of local produce, handcrafted goods and fun activities.

The market will feature returning and new vendors. Longtime vendors, such as Theis Farm Market and Larson’s Country Market, will have fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs for sale. New vendors, including Allyn’s Going Banana’s Bakery and OpenDoor Coffee, will be selling homemade baked goods and freshly brewed coffee. All vendors will provide the market with a wide variety of products, making the market the ideal spot for grocery or gift shopping.

Not only does the DeKalb Farmers Market have product vendors, but also multiple food trucks. Local favorites such as Tinez Tacos will be returning, along with Slow Smoke BBQ. Isidore’s Table Vegan Café and Juice Bar Truck will be new to the market, featuring vegan and organic lunch options. While grabbing lunch, visitors can enjoy live music during the market’s Live Lunch Music Series presented by the Egyptian Theatre. Marketgoers can listen to live music from groups such as Stage Coach Players and Acromusical from noon to 1:30 p.m.

After perusing all the market’s vendors, eating lunch and enjoying live music, I encourage you to wander outside of the market and into the rest of downtown DeKalb. The market is in the heart of downtown and a short walk to local shops, restaurants, historic landmarks and The Confectionary. Continue supporting local businesses and shop small outside of the market.

The DeKalb Farmers Market is proud to provide the community with fresh produce, crafted goods and lunch options. The market accepts cash, debit and credit, and LINK thanks to sponsor First National Bank.

For a complete list of vendors and to learn what each of them have to offer, visit www.dekalb.org. To stay connected, follow the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb Farmers Market on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Use the hashtag #DeKalbFarmersMarket for your chance to be featured.

Once you get your lawn chairs set up and smell the fresh air, come on down to the DeKalb Farmers Market to kick off your summer. The market will keep your summer fresh, local and crafted.
