Extension's Wee Naturalist program returns

The Wee Naturalist program will be held the first Saturday of the month October through May at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve in Genoa.
The Wee Naturalist program will be held the first Saturday of the month October through May at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve in Genoa.

University of Illinois Extension, in partnership with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve, will start up the Wee Naturalist program on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The program will take place at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve on Route 72 in Genoa.

Wee Nats is for children ages 5 and 6 years old, along with a parent or guardian, and will start at 10:30 a.m. Wee Nats will be offered the first Saturday of each month October through May. It will last approximately one hour and each month will have a different nature theme.

With the help of Extension staff and volunteers, children will learn through hands-on activities, stories, crafts and hikes. The cost is $5 per child and there will be a limit of 15 students.

The topics and dates for the program are:

Oct. 5 – Worms

Nov. 2 – Autumn

Dec. 7 – Box Turtles

Jan. 4 – Owls

Feb. 1 – Hibernation

March 7 – Rain

April 4 – Recycling

May 2 – Seeds
