DeKALB - The DeKalb School Board will on Tuesday consider whether to change its Class of 2020 graduation plans from an Aug. 1 ceremony to July 11.
According to Superintendent Jamie Craven's proposal, the reasoning is due to Northern Illinois University's announcement that their planned August ceremony has been postponed due to ongoing concerns regarding crowds amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The D-428 school board had previously decided it would attempt to hold an Aug. 1 ceremony at NIU's Convocation Center in the hopes that by late summer, mandates regarding public health would be relaxed.
"Given the recent announcement from NIU that they have canceled their August 8 graduation ceremony and have shared with me that it is 'very unlikely that they will open for high schools', there have been requests to move graduation back to the proposed date of July 11," Craven said.
It was his initial plan to hold the ceremony July 11, however, the school board decided to request a different plan.
The board will vote on the twice-amended commencement plan at its regular meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m.
